Personal Background
Dru Kanuha hails from Kealakekua on the Big Island, where he was born and raised. He holds a degree in Political Science and Business Administration from the University of San Diego. Kanuha began his public service career on the Hawai‘i County Council, representing Kona, and was elected Council Chair by his peers in 2014. He was subsequently elected to the Hawai‘i State Senate, where he was named Majority Leader in May 2021. Kanuha has also been deeply involved in community service, dedicating over three decades to organizations such as The Betty Kanuha Foundation and the Kai ‘Ōpua Canoe Club.
